Reflections
The South Laurel “Cardinals” season has come to an end. With the second round playoff loss, the Cardinals have finished the season with 9 Wins and 3 losses. It’s a bitter pill to swallow when the season comes to an abrupt end. Even though you know it’s coming in a few weeks ahead, it’s still hits you like the unexpected. Only one team in the state is celebrating after their last game. If you’re not winning the state championship, it’s devastation.
There’s always tears, and hugs all around after that last game. It’s an emotional experience for a football player to go through. When you dedicate so much time and effort, and so much of your heart goes into something, and it comes to a sharp close, it just hurts.
When the dust finally settles, these players will realize what a magnificent accomplishment this season has been. It’s only the third time since 1998, (KHSAA records only go back that far. We are working on digging up more team records for old Laurel County High), that a Cardinal team has won 9 games in a single season. The only time a Cardinals team has won a playoff game, in the last 20 years, is #Team56. This group has simply raised the standard.
From this season forward, there will be much more expected out of South Laurel football. There will be much more expected out of each and every team. The standard has been raised.
We are very appreciative of our senior class and what they have brought this program into. But now the baton gets handed to the underclassman. It’s up to them to take the reins and continue to grow this program. The plan is to be one of the best in all the 606. Stay with us Cardinal Nation, the brightest days of Cardinal football are certainly ahead.
